Description
November 16 to December 2, 2014 aerial imagery covers the main shoreline of Lake Simcoe and four islands (Georgina, Thorah, Fox, Snake). Taiga Air Services Ltd. acquired the data via helicopter flights 160 metres from shore and 100 metres above water, providing overlapping oblique images in TIFF and JPG formats. The imagery was used to investigate complementing ortho imagery for improved shoreline feature interpretation and mapping updates.
Use Cases
Analyze shoreline erosion or vegetation changes by comparing overlapping oblique images from 2014 to more recent data.
Use the provided photo centre point shapefile to link and visualize imagery within GIS software for spatial analysis of shoreline features.
Train a computer vision model to classify shoreline land cover types (e.g., rock, beach, vegetation) using the high-resolution TIFF (120 Mb) images.
Create a historical snapshot for conservation planning by examining the condition of specific islands like Georgina, Thorah, Fox, and Snake captured in the imagery.
Strengths
Imagery was acquired during a defined 17-day period (November 16 to December 2, 2014), providing a consistent temporal snapshot.
Data collection followed a standardized method: helicopter flights 160 metres from shore and 100 metres above water.
Multiple partner organizations were involved, including provincial ministries and conservation authorities, indicating coordinated oversight.
Limitations
Imagery is from late 2014, making it over a decade old and potentially not reflective of current shoreline conditions.
The dataset appears to be a single packaged product for the entire shoreline, limiting the ability to access or process subsets of the area.
Sample data and specific counts of images or rows are unavailable, hindering assessment of dataset scale and completeness.
