Oblique Aerial Shoreline Imagery of Southeastern Georgian Bay

Oblique aerial imagery covers the southeastern shoreline of Georgian Bay, Ontario, from Port Severn to near the Simcoe/Grey County line. Taiga Air Services Ltd. acquired the data via helicopter flights from November 16 to December 2, 2014. The project involved multiple partners including the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and Environment Canada.

Use Cases

• Analyze shoreline erosion or accretion by comparing 2014 oblique imagery with newer aerial surveys.
• Interpret coastal features like bluffs, wetlands, and nearshore vegetation using high-resolution TIFF or JPG images.
• Link photo centre point shapefiles in GIS software to create interactive maps of the imagery coverage.
• Complement existing ortho imagery to improve the accuracy of shoreline mapping products.

Strengths

• Imagery was captured from a consistent distance of 160 metres from shore and 100 metres above water.
• Data includes overlapping oblique images for stereoscopic analysis.
• Multiple file formats are available, including TIFF (120 MB), JPG (3.5 MB), and a photo centre point shapefile.

Limitations

• Data is from a single snapshot in late 2014, limiting analysis of recent changes.
• The acquisition method (helicopter) may result in variable image geometry compared to fixed-wing surveys.
• Physical ordering via mailed hard drive creates access friction compared to digital download.
