Description
Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA) conducted an annual dredge survey of 83 sites in the River Fal, Cornwall, in 2018. The survey recorded counts of 1501 native oysters, 4145 scallops, and 11525 slipper limpets, along with substrate types and bycatch species. Analysis was performed by sections: Harbour, Outer Harbour, and River.
Use Cases
Modeling population distribution of native oysters (Ostrea edulis) based on site-specific abundance data.
Assessing the co-occurrence and abundance of scallop species (Aequipecten opercularis, Mimachlamys varia) within the fishery area.
Analyzing the spread and density of the invasive slipper limpet (Crepidula fornicata) from recorded individual counts.
Investigating relationships between substrate types and species abundance across surveyed sites.
Studying bycatch composition and its potential impact on the local marine ecosystem.
Strengths
Survey covers 83 specific sites within the Fal Fishery management area.
Provides exact counts for three key species groups: 1501 oysters, 4145 scallops, and 11525 slipper limpets.
Data is analyzed by three distinct geographical sections (Harbour, Outer Harbour, River), allowing for spatial comparison.
Records multiple data layers including species counts, substrate type, and bycatch at each site.
Limitations
Row count and column-level documentation are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Last update date is unknown; freshness unverified.
Data may reflect geographic and temporal bias inherent to a single annual survey in one UK estuary.
