Description
Reports, images, and GIS products describing the Palaeozoic geology and petroleum systems of the UK offshore Irish Sea area, including the Firth of Clyde, Solway Basin, and East Irish Sea Basin. The peer-reviewed products were produced by the British Geological Survey (BGS) for DECC/OGA and industry sponsors between November 2014 and May 2016. The analysis integrates interpretations of well, seismic, gravity-magnetic, and source rock data with petrophysical studies and basin modeling.
Use Cases
Regional basin modeling based on integrated well, seismic, and source rock interpretations
Mapping geological features and petroleum systems at scales between 1:750,000 to 1:3,000,000
Assessing exploration potential in Carboniferous rock sequences across specified offshore quadrants
Integrating new interpretations with existing UK onshore geological knowledge for comparative studies
Strengths
Peer-reviewed products produced by the authoritative British Geological Survey (BGS)
Analysis based on integration of multiple data types: well, seismic, gravity-magnetic, and source rock datasets
Project conducted for UK government (DECC/OGA) and industry sponsors, suggesting applied relevance
Designed for use at specific regional scales (1:750,000 to 1:3,000,000)
Limitations
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
Unreleased raw data is excluded, limiting reproducibility of some interpretations
Provenance
Source
British Geological Survey (BGS)
Collection Method
Collation and interpretation of released data, with agreed inclusion of interpretations from unreleased data.
