Description
A 700-year time series (1301-1995 AD) of major ion chemistry data extracted from three Law Dome ice cores (DSS97, DSS99, DSS main). The dataset includes annual and fine-resolution measurements for species like sulfate, nitrate, sodium, and methanesulfonic acid (MSA). It was compiled by the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AU_AADC) as part of ASAC project 757, with an updated version submitted in July 2012.
Use Cases
Reconstruct volcanic eruption timelines by analyzing fine-resolution sulfate (SO4) spikes from 1301-1995.
Study solar activity influences on climate by correlating annual nitrate (NO3) records from 1888-1995 with solar cycle proxies.
Investigate sea ice extent and marine biogenic activity trends using annual methanesulfonic acid (MSA) data from 1841-1995.
Analyze long-term sea salt aerosol deposition by examining sodium (Na) ion concentrations at both annual and fine temporal resolutions.
Calculate non-sea-salt sulfate (nss SO4) contributions to assess anthropogenic versus natural sulfate sources over seven centuries.
Strengths
Covers a 700-year temporal range (1301-1995 AD) for long-term trend analysis.
Contains data from three distinct ice cores (DSS97, DSS99, DSS main) for spatial comparison.
Provides multiple ion species (SO4, NO3, Na, MSA, Ca, K, Mg, Cl) for multi-proxy studies.
Offers both annual and fine-resolution data for different analytical needs.
Limitations
Sample size (row count) and specific data completeness per species are unknown.
The non-sea-salt sulfate (nss SO4) data contains acknowledged negative values and zeros, indicating unprocessed raw measurements.
The most recent data point is from 1995, making the record temporally stale for contemporary climate studies.
Provenance
Source
Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AU_AADC), compiled as part of ASAC project 757.
Collection Method
Chemical analysis of ice cores drilled at Law Dome, Antarctica.
Time Range
1301 AD to 1995 AD, with varying start years for specific ions.
Freshness
Data last updated in the system on 2000-03-06, with a revised copy submitted to the archive in July 2012.
Geography
Law Dome, East Antarctica.
Consultation with the data provider (Mark Curran) is recommended before using the non-sea-salt sulfate (nss SO4) data due to its unprocessed state with negative values. License terms are unspecified.
