Description
Over 15,000 seabed samples from across the Australian marine region provide textural composition, particle size statistics, and calcium carbonate values. Geoscience Australia extracted this data from its Marine Sediment Database, an online resource of approximately 2.6 million entries. The sample set spans coastal, shelf, slope, and deep ocean locations, covering the extent of the AusBathyTopo 250m 2023 grid.
Use Cases
Seabed characterization based on textural composition and particle size distribution data.
Sediment transport modeling based on particle size statistics and sample locations.
Habitat characterization based on sediment properties and associated water depth.
Seabed engineering studies based on sediment texture and carbonate content.
Fundamental geological research based on the continental-scale collection of marine sediment samples.
Strengths
Over 15,000 seabed samples provide a substantial sample set.
Data is derived from a national collection of approximately 2.6 million entries in the Marine Sediment Database.
Spatial coverage spans the coast, continental shelf, slope, and deep ocean across the Australian marine region.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic bias inherent to data_gov_au.
