Description
Geoscience Australia's Marine Sediment Database provides sediment properties for over 15,000 seabed samples across the Australian marine region, from the coast to the deep ocean. Analytical data includes textural composition, particle size statistics, and calcium carbonate values, with associated location and water depth information. This standalone dataset was extracted from the larger MARS database of approximately 2.6 million entries.
Use Cases
Seabed characterisation based on sediment textural composition and particle size distribution data.
Sediment transport modelling based on particle size statistics and sample locations.
Habitat characterisation based on seabed sediment properties and water depth.
Seabed engineering studies based on sediment texture and carbonate content.
Fundamental geological research based on a continental-scale collection of marine sediment samples.
Strengths
Over 15,000 seabed samples provide a substantial sample set.
Data spans coast, shelf, slope, and deep ocean locations across the Australian region.
Derived from the Marine Sediment Database (MARS) containing approximately 2.6 million entries.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic bias inherent to the Australian region.
Provenance
Source
Geoscience Australia, Australian Ocean Data Network
Collection Method
Extracted and collated from the Marine Sediment Database (MARS).
