Description
Over 15,000 seabed samples from across the Australian marine region provide sediment properties extracted from Geoscience Australia's Marine Sediment Database. Analytical data includes textural composition, particle size distribution statistics, textural class, and calcium carbonate values where available. The dataset spans coastal, shelf, slope, and deep ocean locations and is maintained by the Australian Ocean Data Network.
Use Cases
Seabed characterisation based on sediment texture and particle size data
Sediment transport modelling based on particle size distribution statistics
Habitat characterisation based on seabed sediment composition
Seabed engineering studies based on sediment properties and water depth
Fundamental geological and sedimentological research based on the continental-scale sample set
Strengths
Over 15,000 seabed samples provide a substantial sample set
Data spans coast, continental shelf, slope, and deep ocean across the Australian marine region
Derived from a national collection of marine geological samples with c. 2.6 million entries
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
