Description
United Nations Human Settlements Programme data provides metrics on urban housing conditions in Afghanistan. The dataset includes the proportion and total population living in slums or informal settlements, defined by four key shelter deprivations: lack of access to improved water, improved sanitation, sufficient living area, and durable structure. It also contains the proportion of urban population living in housing that costs more than 30% of their monthly income.
Use Cases
Modeling the prevalence of informal settlements based on UN-Habitat's four deprivation indicators.
Analyzing housing affordability stress using the proportion of income spent on housing.
Comparing urban slum population totals across different regions or territories.
Assessing progress towards SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities) targets related to adequate housing.
Strengths
Data is sourced from the authoritative United Nations Human Settlements Programme.
Metrics are based on a standardized UN-Habitat framework for measuring shelter deprivations.
Includes both proportional and absolute population figures for slum dwellers.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
The fifth UN-Habitat deprivation indicator (security of tenure) is excluded due to data limitations.
