Description
Africa Real Time Environmental Monitoring Information System (ARTEMIS) provides ten-day and monthly satellite-derived maps for Africa and the Near East. The system delivers cold cloud duration, estimated rainfall, and vegetation index maps at 7.6 km resolution. It was developed through cooperation between FAO, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the University of Reading, and the National Aerospace Laboratory of the Netherlands, with operational data delivery since August 1988.
Use Cases
Assess crop growing conditions by comparing current ten-day vegetation index maps against a ten-year historical archive.
Monitor drought risk in the Sahel using ten-day estimated rainfall maps for the Southern Sahara, Sahel, Sudan, and tropical West Africa.
Analyze rainfall patterns for early warning by examining monthly cold cloud duration maps for the continent of Africa.
Track locust habitat conditions by integrating vegetation index composites with bulletins from the FAO Emergency Centre for Locust Operations.
Strengths
Includes a ten-year historical archive of vegetation index data on a ten-day and monthly basis.
Provides routine ten-day and monthly map products at a consistent 7.6 km spatial resolution.
Operational data delivery has been sustained since August 1988.
Limitations
Specific row counts, file sizes, and total data volume are not documented.
Data resolution is fixed at 7.6 km, which may be too coarse for local-scale analysis.
The description does not specify the recency of the last data update or current update frequency.
