Description
Original paper maps and survey reports for detailed agricultural land classification surveys conducted between 1989 and 1999. The Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food surveyed individual sites, mapping land grades from 1 to 5, including subdivisions of Grade 3. Surveys were conducted at varying scales, typically 1:10,000, and include unedited soil sample point data for some sites.
Use Cases
Modeling agricultural land suitability based on detailed soil and land grade classifications.
Historical analysis of land use potential using survey data from the late 1980s and 1990s.
Integrating detailed soil pit descriptions with broader land classification maps for soil science research.
Comparing land grades at varying scales (from 1:5,000 to 1:50,000) for regional planning.
Strengths
Survey data uses the official grading methodology described in 'Agricultural Land Classification of England and Wales'.
Includes subdivision of Grade 3 into subgrades 3a and 3b, providing finer detail.
Contains unedited sample point soils data and soil pit descriptions for some surveys.
