Description
Post-1988 Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) survey data for the Wylam site, collected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food between 1989 and 1999. The dataset includes scanned original paper maps and survey reports, with some surveys providing unedited sample point soils data and soil pit descriptions. Maps use the grading methodology from 'Agricultural Land Classification of England and Wales' and range in scale from 1:5,000 to 1:50,000.
Use Cases
Classify agricultural land capability based on the detailed grading methodology described in the survey reports.
Analyze historical land use suitability for planning or research based on the mapped ALC grades and subgrades.
Integrate point-level soil data with geospatial land classification maps for environmental modeling, where such sample data is available.
Strengths
Includes the subdivision of Grade 3 into subgrades 3a and 3b, providing finer detail for analysis.
Original survey maps and reports are provided, offering primary source material for verification.
Some surveys contain unedited sample point soils data and soil pit descriptions, adding granular soil information.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Last update date is unknown; freshness unverified.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale ML tasks.
