Description
AGSO Cruise 125 collected swath-mapping and reflection seismic data off Tasmania and during transits between New Zealand and Australia in February-March 1994. The survey used the French research vessel L'Atalante and its SIMRAD EM12D system to produce bathymetric maps and sonar imagery. The Australian Ocean Data Network hosts the cruise report, which includes maps at scales from 1:100,000 to 1:1,000,000.
Use Cases
Model seafloor bathymetry based on 25m and 50m contour maps.
Analyze sonar imagery for geological features and habitat mapping.
Study regional tectonic structures using reflection seismic data.
Create detailed maps for fisheries management based on 1:100,000 scale data.
Strengths
Data collection covered a specific cruise from February 12 to March 29, 1994.
Maps were produced at multiple scales, including 1:250,000 for transits and detailed surveys, and 1:100,000 for specific fisheries areas.
The swath-mapping system functioned well throughout the cruise, as stated in the report.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic/temporal bias inherent to the single 1994 cruise.
Provenance
Source
Australian Ocean Data Network
Collection Method
Data were collected during a dedicated marine research cruise using the R.V. L'Atalante's SIMRAD EM12D swath-mapping system and reflection seismic equipment.
