Description
From 10 to 17 April 1997, the Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO) conducted a marine survey using the R.V. Melville, equipped with multibeam sonar, magnetometer, and gravity meter. The cruise aimed to map sea bed morphology and character off eastern Tasmania and in the Gippsland Basin to support tectonic, sedimentological, and fishing industry studies. Data includes ship tracks, bathymetric profiles, and geophysical measurements with navigation accuracy of about 5 meters.
Use Cases
Modeling seafloor morphology and roughness based on multibeam sonar swath-mapping data.
Conducting tectonic and basin analysis based on integrated bathymetric, magnetic, and gravity measurements.
Supporting fisheries habitat mapping based on high-resolution sea bed character data.
Planning future seismic profiling and geological sampling campaigns based on the detailed survey tracks.
Strengths
High-precision navigation with an accuracy of about 5 meters using military standard GPS.
Integrated data collection from multiple instruments including SeaBeam 2000 multibeam sonar, a magnetometer, and a gravity meter.
Survey was planned using satellite gravity images and existing sparse bathymetric and seismic profiles.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data files are in PDF and HTML formats, which may require extraction for computational analysis.
