Description
The AHO Reference Surfaces Banks Strait 0.5m 2023 dataset is a high-resolution bathymetry survey acquired for the Australian Hydrographic Office on 17 Dec 2021. It was created from a contracted national reference survey within Banks Strait to Cape Barren, Tasmania, for calibrating multibeam echosounders. The dataset is provided as a 0.5m resolution, 32-bit floating point GeoTIFF grid in MSL, LAT, and Ellipsoid vertical datums.
Use Cases
Calibrating multibeam echosounders based on the described reference survey purpose.
Analyzing seafloor topography based on the high-resolution bathymetric grid.
Creating or validating nautical charts for the Banks Strait region based on the survey area.
Conducting marine geological or habitat studies based on detailed seabed elevation data.
Strengths
High 0.5-meter spatial resolution for detailed bathymetric analysis.
Survey conducted using specific, named equipment (Kongsberg EM 2040 MkII and EM 2040P).
Data provided in three vertical datums (MSL, LAT, Ellipsoid) for flexibility.
Limitations
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
The dataset is explicitly not to be used for navigational purposes, limiting its primary application.
