3,600 original field notebooks contain geologic observations from USGS geologists working in Alaska. Records include field stations, sample numbers, rock descriptions, terrain conditions, and outcrop sketches. Some notebooks also report daily weather, topographic measurements, and personal accounts from early explorers.
Access is restricted; viewing requires a written request or appointment. Certain materials may have further restrictions for non-government employees. Physical microfilm copies are stored in Menlo Park, California.
