Description
132,254 infrared and optical counterpart associations for 106,573 bright X-ray sources from the ROSAT 2RXS survey, created using the NWAY Bayesian matching algorithm. The table was generated by NASA HEASARC in February 2018 based on a published catalog. The matching process, which uses a WISE color-magnitude prior, demonstrates a reliability of 94.7 percent based on a reference sample of 4,524 XMM/Chandra and Swift sources.
Use Cases
Training or validating cross-matching algorithms based on the described NWAY Bayesian method.
Classifying X-ray sources as stars or AGN based on the proposed X-ray/WISE flux-magnitude plane separation.
Studying the properties of bright X-ray sources with reliable infrared and optical counterparts.
Benchmarking new survey data (e.g., eROSITA, Athena) against established ROSAT source identifications.
Strengths
High reliability of 94.7 percent for counterpart associations, validated against a reference sample of 4,524 sources.
Associations cover 106,573 X-ray sources, providing a large sample of the brightest X-ray sources in the sky.
Uses a modern Bayesian algorithm (NWAY) that incorporates priors like colors and magnitudes for improved accuracy.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count for the final matched table is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data is restricted to sources with Galactic latitude |b| > 15 degrees, introducing a spatial bias against the Galactic plane.
Provenance
Source
NASA HEASARC, based on CDS catalog J/MNRAS/473/4937.
Collection Method
Cross-matching of ROSAT 2RXS X-ray sources with AllWISE and Gaia catalogs using the NWAY Bayesian algorithm.
Time Range
Based on the ROSAT survey (1990s) and subsequent AllWISE and Gaia data releases.
Freshness
Last updated 2026-03-13 18:35:29.071388; freshness should be verified.
Geography
All-sky, but limited to sources with Galactic latitude |b| > 15 degrees.
