A dataset supporting a 2022 report commissioned by DAERA to assess historic land uses in Northern Ireland that may have resulted in mercury contamination. The analysis uses the NIEA Historical Land Use database and DoE Industrial Profiles to assign a 4-tier risk rating to sites. This work forms part of Northern Ireland's response to EU Regulation 2017/852 on mercury contamination.
Use Cases
- Identify and prioritize sites for environmental remediation based on the 4-tier mercury risk rating.
- Analyze the correlation between historical industrial land use categories and potential mercury contamination.
- Support regulatory compliance and reporting for EU mercury regulations using the assessed site data.
Strengths
- Dataset is associated with a formal report commissioned by the government department DAERA.
- Analysis is based on the NIEA Historical Land Use database and established DoE Industrial Profiles.
- Includes a defined 4-tier risk rating system for mercury contamination.
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
- Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
