Geoscience Australia researchers published a study in 2017 applying random forest, generalized linear, and hybrid models to predict sponge species richness. The work addressed variable and model selection issues to map non-linear relationships between species richness and environmental predictors. It generated a high-accuracy spatial distribution of sponge species richness, revealing associations with hard seabed features.
