Description
The Australia Telescope National Facility Pulsar Catalog is a compilation of known pulsars, descended from the 1993 'Catalog of 558 Pulsars'. The catalog has been supplemented with data from recent radio surveys, including the Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey, and includes binary, astrometric, and spin parameters for pulsars. It is maintained by the HEASARC and was last revised in January 2014.
Use Cases
Modeling pulsar population distributions based on included astrometric and spin parameters.
Studying binary star systems using the included binary parameters for known binary pulsars.
Analyzing the characteristics of high-energy pulsars (X-ray, gamma-ray, AXPs, SGRs) included as separate subsets.
Cross-referencing radio pulsar data with other astronomical surveys using the catalog's compiled identifiers.
Strengths
Catalog is descended from a foundational 1993 paper listing 558 pulsars, indicating a long-standing compilation effort.
Includes data from major recent surveys like the Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey, suggesting ongoing updates.
Contains specific subsets for high-energy pulsars not detected at radio wavelengths, broadening its scope.
Limitations
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale analysis.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Excludes accretion-powered pulsars (e.g., Her X-1, X-ray millisecond pulsars), limiting its completeness for all pulsar types.
Provenance
Source
Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF), compiled by R.N. Manchester et al., hosted by NASA HEASARC.
Collection Method
Compiled from published data, including results from specific radio surveys using the ATNF Parkes 64-m telescope.
Time Range
Covers pulsars published up to at least the catalog's revision date; includes data from a 1993 catalog and surveys from 2001.
Freshness
Last updated 2026-03-13 17:31:48.699957; freshness should be verified as the underlying catalog data may be older.
Geography
Observations likely include data from the Parkes Observatory in Australia and other contributing telescopes worldwide.
