Description
The Torres Strait region, bounded by Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea, contains a 30-meter resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of depth and elevation data. The dataset was compiled from multiple sources including multibeam surveys, airborne LiDAR bathymetry, and satellite-derived bathymetry, and is managed by the Australian Ocean Data Network. It is intended to support marine habitat mapping and hydrodynamic modeling for the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem.
Use Cases
Marine habitat mapping based on the 30m-resolution depth and elevation grid.
Simulating water mixing for hydrodynamic models based on the whole-of-Great Barrier Reef scale data.
Supporting safe navigation planning based on the compiled bathymetry of the extensive reef and shoal system.
Analyzing continental slope canyons and delta deposits based on multibeam survey data mentioned in the description.
Strengths
30-meter spatial resolution provides detailed topographic and bathymetric information.
Compiled from multiple high-quality sources including multibeam surveys, airborne LiDAR, and satellite data.
Covers the Torres Strait, a vital area at the northern end of the Great Barrier Reef.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
The dataset is explicitly not to be used for navigational purposes.
Provenance
Source
Australian Ocean Data Network
Collection Method
Compiled from multibeam surveys, airborne LiDAR bathymetry, satellite-derived bathymetry, and the National Intertidal Digital Elevation Model (NIDEM).
