Description
AUSCAN was a major 2003 research expedition investigating Australia's southern margin from Tasmania to Cape Leeuwin. The 3-week survey aboard the RV Marion Dufresne collected multibeam sonar bathymetry, geophysical profiles, geological and biological samples, and oceanographic measurements. Data were gathered to support marine environmental planning, model the margin's evolution, and understand late Quaternary climatic changes, with a focus on the Murray Canyons system.
Use Cases
Modeling structural and sedimentological evolution of a continental margin based on geophysical profiling and sampling data.
Environmental management and marine spatial planning based on integrated seabed mapping and habitat data.
Studying late Quaternary climatic and oceanographic changes based on analysis of deep-sea sediment cores.
Detailed geomorphological analysis of submarine canyon systems based on high-resolution multibeam bathymetry.
Strengths
High-resolution bathymetric and backscatter images from a multibeam sonar system capable of mapping a 20 km wide swath in deep water.
Includes deep-sea sediment cores up to 60 meters long, recovered using a giant piston corer.
Data collection involved international scientific cooperation from multiple institutions, including Geoscience Australia and the French Polar Institute.
Survey design aimed to integrate new data with pre-existing seabed datasets to create a comprehensive environmental management framework.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data files are in PDF and HTML formats, which may require extraction and conversion for computational analysis.
Provenance
Source
Australian Ocean Data Network, aggregating data from Geoscience Australia, the French Polar Institute (IPEV), and other international partners.
Collection Method
Collected via a 3-week research cruise using multibeam swath-mapping, geophysical profiling, geological/biological sampling, and oceanographic measurements.
