Description
Geoscience Australia's 2009 bathymetry and topography grid combines multibeam, single beam, and satellite-derived data for Australia and its Exclusive Economic Zone. The 0.0025 degree resolution grid is supported where direct observations are dense, such as areas with swath bathymetry or digitized charts. In other offshore areas, the grid incorporates 1-2 arc minute ETOPO satellite bathymetry and revised topography grids from Australia, New Zealand, and SRTM DEM data.
Use Cases
Modeling coastal inundation and sea-level rise impacts based on integrated topography and bathymetry.
Analyzing seabed morphology for marine habitat mapping based on compiled multibeam and single beam data.
Creating base maps for offshore resource exploration using the satellite-derived bathymetry in deep waters.
Conducting geophysical studies of the continental shelf using the high-resolution grid where direct observations exist.
Strengths
Integrates multiple high-quality data sources, including 2009 bathymetry from Geoscience Australia and revised 2008 topography grids.
Provides a 0.0025 degree resolution grid where supported by dense direct observations like swath bathymetry.
Covers a defined spatial area encompassing Australia's onshore topography and the bathymetry of its adjoining Exclusive Economic Zone.
Limitations
The description notes the 0.0025 degree resolution is only supported in areas with sufficiently dense direct bathymetric observations.
Data coverage excludes Australia's marine jurisdiction offshore from the Territory of Heard and McDonald Islands and the Australian Antarctic Territory.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
