Description
Geoscience Australia's national-scale database comprises raw organic geochemistry, organic petrology, and stable isotope analytical results for Australian source rocks, crude oils, and natural gases. The data are compiled from industry submissions under legislative requirements, research projects, service company reports, well completions reports, government reports, published papers, and theses. A derivative Petroleum Systems Summary database provides statistical evaluations and interpretations of petroleum systems across the Australian continent.
Use Cases
Conduct basin analysis and petroleum systems evaluation based on raw organic geochemistry data for source rocks, crude oils, and natural gases.
Perform resource assessments and prospectivity modeling based on statistical evaluations of analytical data by basin.
Support hydrogen exploration and carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) programs using geochemical data on sedimentary rocks and earth materials.
Inform enhanced oil recovery projects using complementary physical and inorganic analyses on hydrocarbon-based materials.
Strengths
Described as the only public comprehensive database of Australian hydrocarbon geochemistry at the national scale.
Data sourced from a wide range of authoritative inputs, including legislative industry submissions, government research, and published scientific literature.
Includes both raw analytical data and derived statistical evaluations and interpretations in a companion Petroleum Systems Summary database.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count and dataset size are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data freshness should be verified; last metadata update was 2026-04-16 10:15:48.202082.
