Description
Geoscience Australia's collection comprises organic geochemistry, petrology, and stable isotope data for source rocks, crude oils, and natural gases from onshore and offshore Australian sedimentary basins. The data are produced from samples submitted by industry under legislative requirements and collected by research projects, compiled from service company reports, well completions reports, government reports, and published papers. The collection is non-confidential and available for use by government, industry, and researchers.
Use Cases
Conduct basin analysis and petroleum systems evaluation based on raw organic geochemistry and isotopic values.
Perform resource assessments and prospectivity modeling based on compiled petroleum systems information.
Support carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) program planning based on geochemical data from sedimentary rocks.
De-risk hydrogen exploration programs based on data relevant to sediment-hosted energy resources.
Strengths
Data is described as the only public comprehensive database of its kind at the national scale for Australia.
Collection includes data from a wide range of sources, including industry submissions under legislative requirements and research projects.
Covers multiple material types including source rocks, crude oils, and natural gases from both onshore and offshore basins.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic and source bias inherent to data_gov_au, focusing on Australian sedimentary basins and open-file industry data.
Provenance
Source
Geoscience Australia, other government agencies, scientific institutions, and industry reports.
Collection Method
Compiled from destructive analytical techniques on samples, service company reports, well completions reports, government reports, published papers, and theses.
