Description
Geoscience Australia's collection comprises raw organic geochemistry, organic petrology, and stable isotope data for Australian source rocks, crude oils, and natural gases. The data are compiled from industry submissions under legislative requirements, research projects, service company reports, well completions reports, government reports, published papers, and theses. A derivative Petroleum Systems Summary database provides statistical evaluations and interpretations of petroleum systems by basin across the Australian continent.
Use Cases
Basin analysis and petroleum systems evaluation based on raw organic geochemistry and stable isotope data.
Resource assessments and prospectivity mapping based on compiled petroleum systems information by basin.
De-risking hydrogen exploration programs based on source rock and geochemistry data relevant to hydrogen exploration.
Modeling for carbon capture, utilisation, and storage programs based on complementary inorganic analyses of sedimentary rocks.
Strengths
Data is described as the only public comprehensive database of its kind at the national scale for Australia.
Includes data from a wide range of sources, including legislative industry submissions and multiple research institutions.
Covers both onshore and offshore Australian sedimentary basins for energy exploration.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count and dataset size are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic and source bias inherent to data_gov_au platform collections.
Provenance
Source
Geoscience Australia
Collection Method
Compiled from destructive analytical techniques on samples, industry reports, well completions reports, government reports, published papers, and theses.
