Description
Geoscience Australia houses one of the world's largest collections of petroleum data, available to industry, researchers, and the public. The collection includes well completion reports, logs, analysis reports, seismic profiles, and core photography submitted under legislative requirements or collected by research projects. Data can be discovered through the National Offshore Petroleum Information Management System (NOPIMS).
Use Cases
Assessing petroleum resource potential based on well logs and completion reports.
Conducting geological investigations using vertical seismic profiles and core photography.
Analyzing historical subsurface data from the pre-digital era for longitudinal studies.
Strengths
Described as one of the world's largest collections of petroleum data.
Includes data from legislative submissions, research projects, and marine surveys.
Contains both digital data and historical hard-copy materials.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count and file formats are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic and temporal bias inherent to its legislative and research sources.
