Description
Geoscience Australia's Boreholes database provides borehole header, directional survey, and lithostratigraphic data. The service includes records from Geoscience Australia, its predecessor organisations (BMR, AGSO), Commonwealth offshore jurisdictions, and a selection of onshore boreholes from government and private entities. It conforms to the GeoSciML v4.1 data transfer standard where possible.
Use Cases
Map subsurface geological formations based on lithostratigraphic data.
Analyze borehole trajectories and depths based on directional survey data.
Study historical drilling activity based on records from predecessor organisations.
Compare onshore and offshore geological observations based on jurisdiction coverage.
Strengths
Data conforms to the GeoSciML v4.1 data transfer standard where possible.
Includes records from multiple sources: Geoscience Australia, BMR, AGSO, Commonwealth offshore, and onshore entities.
Provides a data dictionary and status vocabulary via linked PDF documentation.
Limitations
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Geoscience Australia is not the authoritative source for all data; custodian agencies should be consulted.
Provenance
