Description
Geoscience Australia's Boreholes database provides header, directional survey, and lithostratigraphic data for boreholes drilled onshore and offshore in Australian jurisdictions. The service includes records from Geoscience Australia, its predecessor organisations, Commonwealth offshore areas, and a selection of onshore government and private boreholes. It conforms to the GeoSciML v4.1 data transfer standard and was last updated on 2026-04-16.
Use Cases
Map borehole locations based on the geospatial web service delivery.
Analyze subsurface geological formations based on lithostratigraphic data.
Study borehole drilling history and status based on sourced regulatory records.
Integrate borehole data with other geological datasets using the GeoSciML standard.
Strengths
Includes data from both onshore and offshore Commonwealth marine jurisdictions.
Conforms to the GeoSciML v4.1 data transfer standard.
Links to a detailed data dictionary and status vocabulary PDF.
Limitations
Row count and dataset size are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred from the linked PDF.
Geoscience Australia is not the authoritative source for all data; custodian agencies should be consulted.
