Description
Geoscience Australia's Boreholes database provides header, directional survey, and lithostratigraphic data for onshore and offshore boreholes. The service includes records from Geoscience Australia, its predecessor organisations (BMR, AGSO), Commonwealth offshore jurisdictions, and selected onshore government and private boreholes. Data delivery conforms to the GeoSciML v4.1 standard where possible.
Use Cases
Map borehole locations and depths based on header and directional survey data.
Analyze subsurface geological formations based on lithostratigraphic observations.
Compare borehole data from different regulatory authorities and custodians.
Integrate borehole records into geological models using the GeoSciML standard.
Strengths
Includes data from multiple sources: Geoscience Australia, predecessor organisations (BMR, AGSO), Commonwealth offshore, and selected onshore entities.
Conforms to the GeoSciML v4.1 data transfer standard where possible, promoting interoperability.
Provides a data dictionary and a separate vocabulary document for borehole status definitions.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred from the provided PDF data dictionary.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Geoscience Australia is not the reporting authority; data sourced from other regulators may have varying completeness.
Provenance
Source
Geoscience Australia's Boreholes database, sourced from various State, Northern Territory, and Commonwealth regulatory authorities.
Collection Method
Data aggregated from regulatory authorities for Geoscience Australia research purposes.
Freshness
