Description
Geoscience Australia's database provides borehole header, directional survey, and lithostratigraphic data for research purposes. The service aggregates records from its own drilling, Commonwealth offshore jurisdictions, and a selection of onshore government and private boreholes. This OGC-conformant web service, last updated in April 2026, adheres to the GeoSciML v4.1 data transfer standard where possible.
Use Cases
Model subsurface geology based on lithostratigraphic observations mentioned in the description.
Analyze borehole trajectories and locations based on directional survey data.
Research historical drilling activity based on aggregated records from government and private entities.
Integrate borehole data into geological information systems using the GeoSciML v4.1 standard.
Strengths
Data conforms to the GeoSciML v4.1 data transfer standard, promoting interoperability.
Includes records from multiple sources: Geoscience Australia, predecessor organizations, and regulatory authorities.
Covers both onshore and Australian Commonwealth offshore marine jurisdictions.
Limitations
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Geoscience Australia is not the authoritative source for all data; original custodians should be consulted.
