Description
Geoscience Australia's Boreholes database provides borehole header, directional survey, and lithostratigraphic data. The service includes records from GA and its predecessors, all Commonwealth offshore boreholes, and a selection of onshore holes from government and private entities. It was last updated on 2026-03-25 and conforms to the GeoSciML v4.1 data transfer standard where possible.
Use Cases
Model subsurface geology based on lithostratigraphic observations.
Analyze borehole trajectories and locations based on directional survey data.
Map geological features across Australian jurisdictions using the geospatial service.
Research historical drilling activity based on records from predecessor organizations.
Strengths
Data conforms to the GeoSciML v4.1 data transfer standard where possible.
Includes records from multiple sources: Geoscience Australia, its predecessors (BMR, AGSO), and other government and private entities.
Covers both onshore and all Commonwealth offshore marine jurisdictions.
Limitations
Row count and dataset size are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred from the linked data dictionary.
Geoscience Australia is not the authoritative source for all data; the custodian agency should be consulted for authoritative information.
