As of the end of 1986, the Gippsland Basin had supplied 88% of Australia's cumulative crude oil and 48% of its natural gas production. This report from Geoscience Australia details the discovery of 44 petroleum accumulations, cumulative production figures, and estimated remaining reserves for oil, condensate, LPG, and sales gas. The petroleum is found in structural traps within Oligocene to Late Cretaceous sequences and is believed to be of land-plant origin.
