Description
Over 17 million recorded deaths from Mexico spanning 1998 to 2024, aggregated by shared characteristics. The dataset includes variables for REGISTRATION_YEAR, DEATH_YEAR, geographic states, SEX, AGE, and ICD-10 cause of death codes. It was created by Montserrat Mora to enable analysis of mortality patterns.
Use Cases
Analyze temporal mortality trends by comparing REGISTRATION_YEAR and DEATH_YEAR for specific ICD-10 codes.
Compare cause-specific mortality across geographic regions using REGISTRATION_STATE and RESIDENCE_STATE with ICD-10 codes.
Build demographic mortality profiles by AGE and SEX cohorts for the top causes listed in the ICD-10 Mortality Tabulation LIST1.
Generate population pyramid visualizations of the top 25 causes of death for a specified state, year, and age group using the provided Python script.
Strengths
Covers over 17 million death records, providing substantial statistical power for analysis.
Includes 27 years of continuous data from 1998 to 2024 for longitudinal trend studies.
Contains key analytical variables like ICD-10 cause codes, age, sex, and state-level geography.
Limitations
Data is aggregated by shared attributes (COUNT), limiting individual-level record analysis.
Age and sex codes use non-standard values (e.g., 998 for unknown age, 9 for unknown sex) requiring preprocessing.
Potential for reporting lag or inconsistencies between DEATH_YEAR and REGISTRATION_YEAR.
