A 2026 synthesis of 5,822 field-based paired yield comparisons from 747 studies analyzes the benefits of diversified cropping systems. The dataset, authored by Pan Jiang, shows intercropping and rotation increased staple crop yields by 12% and 11% respectively compared to monocultures. Machine learning models project tailored implementation could increase global staple production by up to 484 million tons annually.
