Inner Darwin Harbour and shallow water areas in and around Bynoe Harbour were sampled for benthic sediment between May 29 and June 19, 2017. The dataset comprises sediment oxygen demand measurements made on seabed sediments. This work was part of a four-year (2014-2018) science program led by the Northern Territory Government, supported by the INPEX-led Ichthys LNG Project, and involved Geoscience Australia, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, and NT DENR.
Use Cases
- Modeling benthic oxygen consumption rates based on sediment oxygen demand measurements.
- Creating thematic habitat maps for marine resource management based on baseline sediment data.
- Assessing the health of marine environments in Darwin and Bynoe Harbour regions based on sediment survey data.
- Supporting marine resource management decisions based on collated baseline data.
Strengths
- Data collection was part of a multi-year (2014-2018) science program aimed at improving knowledge.
- Survey involved multiple partners including Geoscience Australia, AIMS, and NT DENR.
- Sampling occurred over a defined period from May 29 to June 19, 2017.
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
- Data may reflect geographic bias inherent to the specific harbour surveys.
