Description
Tasmania's Bicheno region on the east coast contains a scored time-series of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) images from surveys conducted between 2011 and 2016. The data, from the Australian Ocean Data Network, includes imagery from inside the Governor Island Marine Reserve and nearby outside sites, scored for the presence of Centrostephanus rodgersii urchin barrens. It also contains depth information and a rugosity measure for each image, used in a spatio-temporal analysis comparing barrens inside and outside the reserve.
Use Cases
Modeling spatio-temporal trends in urchin barren presence based on the scored time-series data.
Comparing ecological outcomes inside versus outside a marine reserve based on the Governor Island and external site data.
Analyzing the relationship between benthic structure (rugosity) and urchin barren occurrence based on the included Vector Rugosity Measure.
Studying the impact of depth on the distribution of Centrostephanus rodgersii barrens based on the per-image depth information.
Strengths
Time-series covers a 5-year period from 2011 to 2016.
Includes comparative data from both inside a marine reserve (Governor Island) and three external sites.
Data is linked to a peer-reviewed PLOS ONE article (Perkins et al., 2020) detailing methods and results.
Limitations
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Data may reflect geographic/temporal bias inherent to the specific survey sites and years.
