Description
Samples from eight dredge hauls collected during BMR cruise 107 from seamounts in the Vening Meinesz chain contain calcareous nannofossils, foraminiferids, and macrofossils. The data, aggregated by the Australian Ocean Data Network, covers ages from the Late Cretaceous to the Holocene. The last update was recorded on 2026-04-10.
Use Cases
Reconstructing paleoenvironmental conditions based on described fossil assemblages and inferred water depths.
Modeling seamount volcanic history and subsidence rates based on age ranges and lithology mixtures.
Analyzing debris flow events and sediment transport from shallow to deep water environments.
Studying paleoclimate and latitudinal shifts based on described subtropical/tropical indicators and warm sea conditions.
Strengths
Covers a long temporal range from the Late Cretaceous to the Holocene.
Includes multiple fossil types: calcareous nannofossils, foraminiferids, and fragmentary macrofossils.
Samples originate from eight distinct dredge hauls across several seamounts.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic/temporal bias inherent to data_gov_au.
