Description
The 2016 and 2019 planning map updates provide landscape-scale classifications of greater sage-grouse habitat across Idaho and a small area of Nevada managed by Idaho BLM. The dataset categorizes key habitat areas and four restoration types based on vegetation and disturbance, such as perennial grasslands, annual grass areas, conifer encroachment, and recently burned zones. It is intended for use at a 1:100,000 scale for general conservation planning, with updates intended to chart annual landscape-level changes.
Use Cases
General conservation and restoration planning based on classified habitat and restoration potential types.
Tracking landscape-level changes in sage-grouse habitat over time using the annually updated planning map.
Identifying areas for potential restoration projects based on categories like conifer encroachment (R3) or recently burned areas (RB).
Informing broad-scale habitat assessments using the provisional map extent for key habitat and restoration areas.
Strengths
Cross-platform presence on Data.gov indicates established use and importance for public resource management.
Explicitly defines multiple habitat restoration types (R1, R2, R3, RB) with clear vegetation and potential criteria.
Intended for annual updates to track landscape-level changes over time, suggesting a longitudinal design.
Limitations
Map extents for key habitat and restoration areas are provisional, contingent on final outcomes of national strategy analyses.
Column names and row counts are unknown, limiting understanding of the data's granular structure.
Designed for a 1:100,000 scale; requires additional data or field verification for applications at finer scales.
