Description
A broadscale habitat layer for the North West of Jones Bank recommended Marine Conservation Zone (rMCZ) was produced in 2012. The data was collected by Gardline and Cefas Endeavour vessels in February, March, and July of that year. The layer was created by analyzing acoustic and ground truth data, assigning EUNIS classes using PSA data, and applying expert visual interpretation.
Use Cases
Classifying seafloor habitats based on EUNIS level 3 classification mentioned in the description
Mapping conservation zone boundaries based on the geospatial habitat layer
Analyzing habitat distribution patterns based on interpreted acoustic survey data
Validating habitat models using the ground truth data referenced in the description
Strengths
Data collection involved multiple surveys across specific dates in 2012 (29th February, 31st March, 11th-12th July)
Analysis combined multiple data sources: acoustic surveys, ground truth data, and expert visual interpretation
Habitat classification follows the standardized EUNIS (European Nature Information System) framework
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
Row count and spatial resolution are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
