Description
A broadscale habitat map for the South Rigg recommended Marine Conservation Zone (rMCZ). The dataset was produced by analyzing acoustic and ground truth survey data to classify seabed habitats into rock and sediment types, including coarse sediment, sand, mud, and mixed sediment. The classification further divides areas into littoral and subtidal zones and energy levels (Low, Moderate, High) according to the EUNIS framework.
Use Cases
Modeling marine habitat distribution based on acoustic and ground truth survey data.
Assessing conservation zone boundaries and management strategies based on seabed sediment and energy classifications.
Training classifiers for automated seabed mapping using the described EUNIS habitat categories.
Strengths
Habitat classification uses the standardized EUNIS framework.
Map integrates multiple data sources, including acoustic surveys and ground truthing.
Data is associated with a published site report (Evans et al., 2016).
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count and spatial resolution are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
