Description
The Australian Ocean Data Network hosts a BRUVS survey comprising 5097 individuals from 202 species of fishes, sharks, rays, and sea snakes. Data were collected from 56 baited remote underwater video stations around Heron Island between 2014-06-23 and 2014-07-02, with 311 images captured. The dataset records habitat classification, species identity with CAAB codes, arrival times, behavior, maturity, and relative abundance metrics like MaxN.
Use Cases
Modeling species abundance and distribution based on MaxN and arrival time data.
Classifying benthic habitat types based on recorded topography, sediments, and benthos.
Analyzing fish behavior patterns based on the eight recorded categories, including feeding.
Training image recognition models for marine species using the associated reference library of approximately 3500 images.
Strengths
Contains observations for 5097 individuals across 202 distinct species.
Data collection is structured, recording multiple variables like behavior, maturity, and habitat.
Includes a reference library of approximately 3500 best images from related BRUVS projects.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale ML.
Data may reflect geographic and temporal bias inherent to a single island survey in 2014.
