Description
Heron Island, Australia, was surveyed using 56 baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS) from June 23 to July 2, 2014. The dataset comprises 5,097 observed individuals from 202 species of fishes, sharks, rays, and sea snakes, with 311 associated images. Data recorded includes habitat classification, species identity with CAAB codes, arrival times, behavior, maturity, and relative abundance metrics like MaxN.
Use Cases
Modeling species abundance and distribution based on MaxN and arrival time data.
Classifying benthic habitat types based on topography, sediment, and benthos descriptions.
Analyzing fish feeding behavior based on the 8 recorded behavior categories.
Studying population demographics based on recorded maturity (adult or juvenile).
Strengths
Observations of 5,097 individuals from 202 species provide a substantial sample.
Data collection is structured around specific metrics like MaxN, arrival time, and 8 behavior categories.
Includes 311 images from the survey, with approximately 3,500 reference images stored in a related library.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic and temporal bias inherent to a single island survey in 2014.
