Description
713 individual fish, sharks, rays, and sea snakes from 41 species were observed using 17 baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS) at Rockingham Bay inshore shoals in May 2010. The dataset includes 200 images and records habitat classification, species identity with CAABCODES, arrival time, behavior, maturity, and relative abundance (MaxN). Data entry and analysis were facilitated by a custom Microsoft Access interface developed by AIMS staff.
Use Cases
Analyze species distribution and relative abundance (MaxN) across different benthic habitat classifications.
Model the time elapsed before maximum observed abundance (MaxN) or feeding behavior occurs for different species.
Classify fish maturity (adult or juvenile) and behavior across 8 categories using image and observational data.
Study arrival time patterns and feeding behavior on bait for 41 identified species of fish, sharks, rays, and sea snakes.
Strengths
Contains observations for 713 individual organisms from 41 distinct species.
Includes 200 images captured from 17 baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS).
Records detailed behavioral data across 8 categories, including feeding on bait.
Provides habitat classification data covering topography, sediments, and benthos.
Limitations
Sample size is limited to a single survey period from May 10-13, 2010, with no temporal replication.
The dataset of 713 individuals and 200 images is relatively small for training complex machine learning models.
Data collection relied on manual observation and classification from video, which may introduce observer bias.
