Description
1083 individuals from 86 species of fishes, sharks, rays, and sea snakes observed using 15 baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS) around the Townsville Region and Robbery Shoals. The dataset includes 239 images and records habitat classification, species identity with CAAB codes, arrival times, behavior, maturity, and relative abundance metrics. Data was collected by AIMS staff from December 11 to 15, 2001, and is managed by the Australian Ocean Data Network.
Use Cases
Analyze species-specific arrival times and feeding behavior based on recorded time and behavior categories.
Model relative fish abundance (MaxN) in relation to benthic habitat types described in the data.
Classify fish maturity stages (adult/juvenile) across different species and locations.
Build a reference library for fish species identification using the associated 239 images.
Strengths
Includes 1083 individual observations from 86 distinct marine species.
Captures 239 reference images from the survey for visual verification.
Records multiple behavioral and ecological variables per observation, including 8 behavior categories and habitat classification.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic and temporal bias inherent to a single, short survey in December 2001.
