Description
516 maps cover the entire continent of Australia at a scale of 1:250,000, representing the largest-scale topographic series for the continent. Each standard map sheet covers an area of approximately 1.5 degrees longitude by 1 degree latitude, depicting natural and constructed features including road and rail infrastructure, vegetation, hydrography, and 50-meter contours.
Use Cases
Extract road and rail infrastructure features for regional transportation network analysis.
Analyze hydrography and 50-meter contour intervals for watershed modeling and terrain assessment.
Identify vegetation coverage and administrative boundaries for land-use planning studies.
Combine map sheets using geographical coordinates (GDA94/GDA2020, UTM projection) for continental-scale geospatial analysis.
Strengths
Covers the entire continent of Australia with 516 map sheets.
Provides the largest-scale (1:250,000) published topographic map series for Australia.
Contains multiple geographic datums (GDA94, GDA2020, AHD) and UTM projection for coordinate accuracy.
Limitations
Data is provided in PDF format, requiring feature extraction for quantitative GIS analysis.
Map sheets may contain information from surrounding sheets, potentially complicating precise boundary delineation.
