A unique dataset from North Carolina was used in the first large-scale study assessing the relationship between teacher certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) and elementary-level student achievement. The study, authored by Dan Goldhaber of the University of Washington, found NBPTS-certified teachers were more effective at increasing student achievement, with effects varying by grade and student type. The associated publication was updated on the web in April 2005.
