Description
NASA HEASARC provides a catalog of 793 X-ray point sources detected in the 4 Ms Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) observations. The data was created by performing simultaneous maximum likelihood PSF fits on 34,930 CANDELS H-band selected galaxies, increasing the detection of faint sources compared to 'blind' methods. This table, updated in April 2018, represents the largest sample of extremely faint X-ray sources assembled to date.
Use Cases
Training models for faint X-ray source detection based on prior optical-NIR galaxy positions.
Analyzing the properties of star-forming galaxies and faint absorbed AGN based on X-ray photometry and optical counterpart validation.
Identifying candidate high-redshift (z > 4) AGN based on photometric redshift estimates mentioned in the description.
Comparing detection techniques by evaluating the increase in faint source detection versus 'blind' X-ray surveys.
Strengths
Contains 793 X-ray point sources, described as the largest sample of extremely faint X-ray sources to date.
Detection technique validated by ray-tracing simulation and uses 34,930 prior galaxy positions for increased sensitivity.
Based on 4 Ms of Chandra observations, providing deep exposure for faint source detection.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Observations were filtered to those with a focal temperature <= -120 C, potentially excluding some data.
Provenance
Source
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA HEASARC), based on CDS Catalog J/ApJ/823/95.
