Description
CDC WONDER's United States Cancer Statistics provide official federal data on cancer incidence and mortality from 1999 onward. The dataset includes case counts, deaths, and age-adjusted rates, broken down by year, state, metropolitan area, age group, race, ethnicity, sex, and cancer site. It is produced by the CDC and NCI in collaboration with the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries.
Use Cases
Analyze age-adjusted incidence and death rates by cancer site and state to identify regional health disparities.
Model mortality trends by year, sex, and race using reported case counts and 95% confidence intervals for rates.
Compare childhood cancer classifications across different metropolitan areas (MSA) and ethnicity groups.
Study the relationship between age group and crude incidence rates for specific cancer sites over time.
Strengths
Data is the official federal statistic for U.S. cancer incidence and mortality.
Covers over 20 years of data, with records starting from 1999.
Includes breakdowns by multiple demographic dimensions: state, MSA, age group, race, ethnicity, and sex.
Provides calculated metrics like age-adjusted rates and 95% confidence intervals.
Limitations
Specific row counts and file sizes are not provided, making scale assessment difficult.
Data is accessed via an HTML interface (WONDER), which may complicate bulk analysis compared to direct file downloads.
Relies on registry data quality, which may vary, though sources are described as high-quality.
