Description
603 locality boundaries in Scotland defined for the 1991 Census to represent built-up areas. The Scottish Government created these boundaries by classifying postcodes as urban or rural based on population density, grouping contiguous high-density postcodes with at least 500 residents. Local authorities were consulted to refine the final boundaries, resulting in 448 localities with 1,000 or more residents.
Use Cases
Mapping urban and rural settlement patterns based on the described 1991 postcode classification.
Analyzing population distribution for localities with 500 or more residents as defined in the methodology.
Studying changes in Scotland's built-up environment following the 1975 local government reorganization mentioned in the description.
Validating or refining administrative boundaries using the local authority consultation process described.
